No one had loved this house in decades.
“It’s haunted,” said the checker at the grocery store. “Like, proven. Eight families in a row left, all freaked out.”
“You don’t say.” I smiled. She looked at me with a strange expression.
The day I moved in, the house felt calm. I thanked it for the gentle welcome.
It took six weeks before it spoke to me—knick knacks on the ground—but none of them breakable. I thanked the house for being considerate in its communication.
I loved the house, and I never had to leave. Twenty-five years this November.
